Kids Help Phone’s Learning Lab offers a variety of learning and development experiences through varying methods in order to meet individual and group needs. Training presents a prime opportunity to expand employees’ knowledge base and they are encouraged to take advantage of the offerings that KHP Learning Lab has available. Specific training and development opportunities under each category will differ year-to-year based on KHP’s needs and budget.

Kids Help Phone Learning Lab is comprised of the following elements:

Onboarding/Quarterly New Hire Orientation

Employees in all regions will participate in new hire onboarding, which consists of an HR orientation, administration orientation, as well as an IT orientation. This includes a general introduction to the organization, its culture, values, mission and policies; and a departmental or job-specific orientation when the employee actually starts work. Employees receive training documents and information from their managers in their own functional area. Employees are also encouraged to meet with members of other departments within their first few weeks of being at KHP. Employees will be invited to a quarterly orientation session where a representative from each department will speak about their role and provide information on what their department does at KHP. Remote and Regional employees will join via webex.

Training Manager/ Coaching

This covers in-house and external training and coaching for all people managers. The training offers a unique opportunity for them to enhance their people management, coaching and leadership skills. People managers will develop new skills, and behaviors and be provided with tools that will assist them in being successful in their roles. This includes training on topics such as People Management 101, Managing Change, Diversity, etc. Remote and Regional employees will join via webex.

Group Training

Group training offers a unique opportunity for employees to build their technical skills and competencies. Employees will be able to participate in departmental training opportunities as well as Training will be conducted externally and internally. Remote and Regional employees will join via webex.

Individual Training

Through the Performance Assessment process completed earlier this year, managers and employees will work together to determine the types of training that would be beneficial and available to the employee. Options would include:

  • On the job experience
    • Committees
    • Teachable Moments (Day to day activity that is a good learning opportunity)
    •  Job Aids (Manuals, Checklists, Procedural Guidelines)
    • Job Expansion (Additional duties to learn new skills)
    •  Job Rotation (Temporarily working in a different area of KHP)
    • Job Shadowing
    •  Learning Alerts (newspaper articles, government announcements, etc.)
    • Peer- Assisted Learning (Colleagues agree to help each other learn different
      tasks)
    • Stretch Assignments
    • Special Projects
  • Relationships & Feedback
    • Coaching
    • Mentoring
    • Networking

E-Learning

E-Learning courses will be made available starting 2020. These courses will allow employees to learn during their own time. Courses include Excel, PowerPoint as well as competency development including having difficult conversations with others and problem solving skills.

Food for Thought

Food for Thought is a development opportunity that is scheduled during the lunch hour and presents a monthly learning and engagement session for all Kids Help Phone staff. The organization will invite speakers (both internal and external) whose experiences align with Kids Help Phone’s monthly thematic calendar to emphasize the organizations monthly theme or campaign. Hosted virtually via WebEx, all Kids Help Phone staff have an opportunity to take a break and learn from a featured guest whose mission aligns with Kids Help Phone and the people the organization serves.
